New car, new brand, same good feeling

RIP STI, we've had some good times together.  Hunting down Audis and stage2 STIs at the track. Lunch, Dinner and Beer runs to wegmans wont be the same anymore,  The new replacement is a 2010 Mitsubishi Evo X.  I got her with 5 miles on the odo.  Still AWD, still turbo and still has 4 doors.  Gas milage is about the same on both(1 mpg diff in favor of the sti).  In many ways it feels the same as the STI but I knew there are key differences.

The front seats for one thing are amazing in the Evo.  I love these recaros.  Sure people say that the Mitsubishi interior is not as good as the subaru but who cares when you're driving at speed and you can feel the Recaros embracting you lovingly and no bobble head.

The steering feels so much more alive than the subaru.  this is a double edged sword as the car WILL respond to even the slightest steering input.

The Suspension is definitely more friendly for daily commutes in the evo than the STI.  however, i'll be able to comment more when I throw her around some corners at VIR in the spring.

I do miss the STI's 6 speed transmission.  the Evo X feels like it has almost the same gearing as the first 5 gears of the STI transmission so at Highway speeds I'm revving at 3k rpms or higher.  I also miss seeing a big hood scoop on my hood.  I used to use that as a visual cue for lining up my car in the middle of a lane.  Now i have different visual cues on the evo.  I also miss the dieep boxer rumble the STI had that causes car alarms to go off when I drive by them.  The evo sounds good but i'm definitely going to have to get a slightly louder catback.

I hope I will have as much fun in the Evo as I did in the STI.  Only time(and track time) will tell.  Looking forward to warmer weather when I can finally get some more mods into the Evo.  So far the list is as follows:

  • Full hood clear bra by Venture Shield
  • Rallyarmor mudflaps
  • Momo shift knob (from sti)
  • Dunlop 3Ds for winter drivin pleasure (and safety)
  • AMS under hood shifter bushings (to be installed)
  • AMS front engine mount (to be installed)
